Umberto Maggioni (né à Lausanne en 1933, d’origine lombarde, installé à Moutier depuis 1955) se concentre depuis des années sur un thème principal, le corps féminin.
Comparant sa démarche à une recherche scientifique, il explore ce thème en profondeur, dans une continuité en constante évolution. Ses volumes denses, proches du bloc de marbre ou de la motte de terre, semblent se développer de l’intérieur vers l’extérieur, et invitent au toucher. Bosses et creux suggèrent une poussée interne, une vie secrète plongée au cœur de la matière.

Biomorphisme: Terme utilisé par certains historiens d’art pour qualifier un certain nombre d’oeuvres produites dans les années 1920 – 30 – 40, présentant des formes aux contours souples, plus ou moins complexes et évoquant la sphère biologique.

Umberto Maggioni (born in Lausanne in 1933, of Lombard origin, based in Moutier since 1955) focused for years on a main theme, the female body. Comparing his approach to scientific research, he explores this theme in depth, in a constantly changing continuity. Its dense volumes, close to the block of marble or clod, seem to grow from the inside to the outside, and invite the touch. Hummocky suggest an internal push, a secret life diving in the heart of the matter. Biomorphism: Term used by some art historians to describe a number of works produced in the 1920s – 30 – 40, having shapes with soft edges, more or less complex and suggestive biological sphere.
